How we Teach

Our teaching method is spiritual: Skill is one's understanding of the laws on the court.  The goal of skill development is mastery.  There are 6 stages of development each law requires in order to master it.  This structure is designed to distinguish players from students, the chaff from the wheat, and reveal their state on the court.

The 3 States on the Court:

Hoopers

Lean on their own understanding.  They straddle the fence 'tween player and student, but this type will only last for a short time in the game.  As those who are lukewarm the game spits out, having no need for them in the end.

Players

Know the laws but disobey them in a game. They tend to strive for a time with skill development but eventually fade from the process.  The game brings suffering upon them due to backsliding, unless they repent.

Student of the Game

This kind hear the law and remember it, remaining ever vigilant in their quest for knowledge on the court.  They will inherit mastery because they seek it, humbly, submitting 100% to the Will of the Game

A Game of Laws

At Be Like David, we believe we’ve uncovered what we call the Gospel of the Game — the sacred order that governs everything that happens on the court.

Basketball, like life, is not random. It is ruled by laws, rooted in physics, positioning, timing, and wisdom. When those laws are followed, there is prosperity. There is progress. There is mastery. When ignored, there is chaos, frustration, and defeat.

Over time, we’ve learned that athletes express three states of mind:

  • Players — They know the laws of the game, but choose not to follow them.

  • Hoopers — They rely on their own understanding, unaware of the laws that govern the game.

  • Students — The few who know the law and obey it.

“By their fruits ye shall know them.” — Matthew 7:16

On the court, the truth is always revealed. Every possession is a test. Every play is a moment of judgment. Will you apply your knowledge — or fall to ignorance, impulse, or pride?

Just as Scripture says, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” So it is in basketball. Most players don’t fail from lack of effort — they fail from lack of understanding.

We exist to teach the laws of the game.

Not trends. Not tricks. Not false confidence. But truth — the unchanging principles that allow any player to grow, compete, and play with clarity and purpose.

To us, basketball is more than a sport.
It’s a path to wisdom.
It’s a mirror of the Gospel.
It’s Life.

Shalom — and welcome to Be Like David.
