It is a mental, physical, and spiritual pursuit—and true development happens when all three are in harmony. 🏀 THE MENTAL GAME: KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING Traditionally, player development has been taught primarily from a physical standpoint. A coach tells a player what to do with their body: Start your shooting arm here. Move it this way. Bend your legs. Follow through. The player then repeats those movements over and over with the hope that “muscle memory” will eventually take over. While repetition has its place, this approach can leave players knowing what to do without truly understanding why they are doing it. At Be Like David, we believe players deserve more. Our approach begins with knowledge and comprehension. Every skill we teach is broken down so the player can understand the principles beneath the movement. We want players to understand the how, why, when, and where—not simply the what. This is the mental side of our methodology, and it takes place through our online skills curriculum. Before we ask the body to perform, we give the mind something to understand. Because when a player understands what is happening beneath the surface, they are no longer simply repeating a movement. They are learning to think, recognize, diagnose, adjust, and make decisions on the court. That gives them something greater than muscle memory. It gives them a mind to use along with their body. 🏀 THE PHYSICAL GAME: PUT KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTION Once the player understands the principles, we take that knowledge into the gym. This is where the physical aspect of development takes place. Players work through the movements, apply the principles, receive feedback, and experience through their own bodies what they have learned. We don't separate knowledge from practice. We connect them. The online curriculum gives the player the understanding. The gym gives the player the opportunity to embody that understanding. Our goal isn't simply to make a player perform a skill correctly in a controlled environment. We want them to understand the skill so deeply that they can recognize when, where, and how to use it in the game. Understand it. Practice it. Master it. That is how development becomes more than repetition. 🏀 THE SPIRITUAL GAME: THE INTENTION WITHIN Then there is the part of basketball that cannot simply be taught through a lesson or a drill: the spiritual game. The spiritual nature of basketball happens within the player. It is found in their intention—their desire to seek knowledge, their willingness to understand it, and ultimately, their decision to apply what they understand. We believe knowledge alone is not enough. A player can have access to information and still choose not to apply it. The difference is found in their intention. There is a saying that ignorance is the lack of knowledge, while wisdom is the application of knowledge. At Be Like David, we don't want to produce players who simply possess information. We want to develop players who pursue knowledge and wisdom.
